The Challenger is a demon from Hell that inhabits a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the SEGA Genesis. The game, itself, was altered by the demon and rebranded as Sonic 2: Challenger’s Edition (the game is kinda like those Kaizo Mario World ROM hacks or Syobon Action/Cat Mario, but for Sonic 2.) In the game, the player plays as Miles “Tails” Prower and they go through various Zones, these Zones being altered to be significantly more difficult and a little spooky (yes, there is hYpERreaLiSTic bLoOd.) The main gimmick is this… If the player loses all their lives, they get a “Game Over” and The Challenger steals their soul, putting it into storage for future use. If the player gets through all the Zones in the game without getting a “Game Over”, they‘re forced into a boss fight with The Challenger, who turns into ”GREAT HELL LORD SONIC, THE ANGEL OF DEATH”. If the player beats him, the cartridge (and packaging) physically teleports to a random thrift shop, yardsale, etc.. Any questions, critiques, opinions?
